For a number of years Alkarama has worked successfully with university students and young graduates as interns or volunteers.

Alkarama regularly recruits new volunteers who seek to obtain work experience in a multi-cultural human rights non-governmental organisation (NGO) working in cooperation with the United Nations on human rights in the Arab world.

Volunteers have a flexible arrangement with Alkarama to contribute to the work of the organisation, typically for a few hours a week. This contribution to Alkarama's work can come in many forms – translations, data entry, working with original documentation, event organisations etc. Volunteers are welcome to come and work in the office or can work from home, depending on the agreement reached.

We are currently seeking volunteers with the following profiles:

Legal profile

  • Fluent spoken and written English, French or Arabic (and working knowledge of at least one other of these languages);
  • Degree in international law, international relations, Middle East Studies, or similar;
  • Knowledge of international human rights mechanisms;
  • Knowledge of Middle East history, politics, etc.;
  • Ability to work in a small, diverse team; professionalism;
  • Computer skills (MS Office Suite and Internet).

Media profile

  • Proficiency in English, French and Arabic
  • Studies in IT; communications or multi-media arts
  • Knowledge of Middle East politics, media environment;
  • Advanced IT skills (MS Office Suite; Web tools Joomla, drupal; Client Relations Management systems)
  • Knowledge of video and audio editing programmes
  • Ability to work in a small, diverse team; professionalism

Translation/Interpretation interns

  • First degree in translation or interpretation
  • Language combinations of Arabic/French/English

Or

  • An advanced degree in Arabic Language studies with proficient English or French
  • Some knowledge of the third language (English/French)

And

  • Knowledge of Middle East history, politics, etc.;
  • Ability to work in a small, diverse team; professionalism;
  • Computer skills (MS Office Suite and Internet).
