Today, September 15, 2024, the world celebrates the International Day of Democracy, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 62/7 of November 8, 2007, in order for the United Nations system to support the efforts of governments to promote and consolidate new or restored democracies.

The United States (US) has continued to wage wars in various forms since the September 11, 2001 attacks. The entire world has become a battlefield for US and allied campaigns against "terrorism" often disregarding international humanitarian law and human rights standards. 

Every year on this date, the world celebrates the International Day of Charity, which was decided by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 67/105 of December 17, 2012.

Alkarama, based in Geneva has launched its annual report 2020. It addresses issues related to the human rights situation in the Arab region, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the continuing pace of repression, in a climate of impunity and armed conflicts.

An independent UN expert expressed her concerns about ill-treatment of three human rights defenders in the United Arab Emirates, which may amount to torture, and urged the authorities to release them.

On December 10, the world celebrates International Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly, while the Arab region is still inhabited by the spectacle of repression, escalating human rights violations and campaigns to restrict freedom of opinion and expression continue to escalate, along with a climate of impunity and lack of justice and accountability.

Alkarama launched today its annual report on the situation of human rights in the Arab region for the year 2019. The report covers 20 countries and is available in three languages, Arabic, English and French.
Alkarama’s Legal Director Rachid Mesli said the report is “an account of Alkarama’s efforts over a year, in terms of the legal work on individual cases and complaints submitted to the special procedures, treaty bodies or in parallel shadow reports. It also highlights Alkarama’s concerns about the situation of human rights in country separately.”

The Swiss daily newspaper Le Temps published on 6-7 January 2018 an article penned by Sylvain Besson suggesting that the Alkarama Foundation is investigated by the Swiss intelligence services because of suspicious relations.
