Alkarama has received confirmation that 30 men have been arrested in recent protests in Salamiya - the first campaign of arrests of its kind to take place in the western Syrian city.

On 11 May 2011, Alkarama submitted the 30 cases to the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and the protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.

Along with the 30 individuals, another 20 unconfirmed arrests took place in Salamiya on Monday 9 May 2011. Syrian authorities continue to bolstered their campaign of repression against pro-democracy demonstrators across the nation.

Among the 30 confirmed arrests is a 70 year-old former political prisoner and leader of the banned opposition Socialist party, Hassan Zahra.

Violent crackdown continues

A wave of popular peaceful protests in Syrian began on 15 March 2011, calling for democratic reforms and an end to corruption. The Syrian authorities have responded with lethal force in series of violent crackdowns across the nation - nearly 700 deaths have been confirmed, as well as more than 8000 arrests.

Political opponents, bloggers and journalists have been unjustly targeted and prevented from reporting of escalating events.

With the abolition of Emergency Law and the State Security Court on 20 April 2011, the Syrian authorities continue to attack, arrests and kill peaceful protestors despite demonstrations no longer being outlawed.

Alkarama requests that the International Community intervene with the Syrian government on behalf of the Syrian people. Furthermore, the Syrian government should immediately remedy to the situation by releasing those who are detained; ensuring that those detained are not exposed to torture or ill-treatment; taking appropriate sanctions against those who mistreat peaceful demonstrators; and to make sure that Human Rights Council Resolution S-16/1 is respected.
