On 4 September 2011, agents of the Syrian Political Security, who were wearing civilian clothes, raided Mr Jwan's house, arrested him and took him to an unknown location. These agents did not present a judicial warrant for his arrest, nor did they give any reason.
On 15 September 2011, Alkarama submitted Mr Jwan's case to the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances with a copy to the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders and the Special Rapporteurs on Torture as he is at high risk of torture and ill-treatment during his disappearance.
A number of peaceful demonstrations have taken place in the country to call to Mr Jwan's release as well as the release of thousands of other people disappeared or detained. However, the Syrian Political Security refuses to provide any information on Mr Jwan's fate or whereabouts.
