Alkarama submitted an urgent appeal to the Special Rapporteur on Torture on 22 December 2008 to ask him to intervene in the case of Dr Saud b. Mubarek b. Zair, a campaigner for constitutional reforms, detained incommunicado since his arrest on 6 June 2007 (see press release).

Alkarama has just been informed of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention’s opinion 11/2008 , issued on 9 May 2008, regarding Mr Amer Al Qahtani, imprisoned for more than 10 years. Alkarama had submitted two communications concerning him, the first dated 18 May 2006.

Mr Amer b. Said b. Mohamed Al Thaqfan Al Qahtani, a teacher, residing in Riyadh, was aged 29 years at the time of his arrest in March 1998.

Alkarama for Human Rights has just been informed of the opinion issued on 8 May 2008 by the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention regarding Mr Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, arbitrarily detained since 2003. Alkarama had submitted a communication to the Working Group on 6 June 2005, asking them to intervene urgently with Saudi authorities.

Alkarama submitted, on 18 September 2008, a communication to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, asking them to intervene in the case of Mr Khalid Al Shammari, a stateless person (Bedouin) from Kuwait, arrested in Saudi Arabia and detained incommunicado since January 2007.

Mr Khalid Said Khalid al-Shammari was born on 7 September 1980 and lives with his family in Kuwait City and carries an identity card for the stateless.

Alkarama submitted, on 11 September 2008 to the Special Rapporteurs on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions a communication concerning the death of Khaled Hatem, a Yemenite citizen, who was arrested at the end of April 2008 and had been detained in the Dahabanhe prison in Djedda since that time.
Alkarama submitted, on 19 August 2008 the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions in relation to the imminent execution of three Saudi nationals, currently detained in the Al-Jouf  prison (Muhafadat Al Qariat).

The three defendants, Mr Khaled Mohammed Issa Al-Qadihi (26 years), Mr Qasim b. Ridha B. Suleyman Al-Mahdi (24 years) and Mr Ali Hassan Issa Al-Bouri (36 years), were arrested on 25 July 2004 at the Al-Haditha border post coming from Syria via Jordan.

On 1st of August 2008, Alkarama submitted a communication to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention asking the Working Group to intervene in the case of Mr Nasser Al Hadiqi. He was wounded by gunfire during his arrest on 8 April 2004, and held since then without having any charges brought against him

Mr Nasser Ali Abdullah Al Hadiqi  is a citizen of Yemen and usually resides with his family in Aden (Yemen). He is 40 years old and worked  in a restaurant in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

Alkarama for Human Rights sent a communication to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) asking it to intervene in the case of Mr. Saleh Al Hweiti, engaged poet, arbitrarily detained since October 27, 2004.

Mr. Saleh Awad Saleh AL HWEITI was born in Riyadh in 1946. His father, former soldier who died in 1978, belongs to the vast nomadic Arab tribe of Anza from the Arabian peninsula that used to wander also in southern Jordan. He was stripped of his nationality in 1969 as part of his family was established in the desert of Jordan.

Alkarama sent a communication to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) asking it to intervene urgently with the Saudi authorities in the case of Mr. Abdulrahim Al-Murbati, Bahraini citizen, detained without due process of law since August 22, 2003 in Saudi Arabia and whose family has receiving no news about him since June 06, 2008.
