Protests began in Syria on 15 March 2011 and as part of the wave of pro-democracy demonstrations across the Middle East. Syrian authorities, including State security and military forces, have been systematically using excessive force, including the live ammunition to try to frighten, disperse and ultimately repress protesters.
Alkarama has submitted the cases of 58 individuals killed in several cities of Syria in recent protests to the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions. Alkarama also recently submitted 6 murder cases from Daara to the Special Rapporteur, including that of a 14-year-old boy. While the 58 dead are from protests which have taken place since 18 March 2011, current fears are that the systematic and ongoing repression of protests by the Syrian authorities will only result in more deaths.
Sources have also confirmed numerous arrests, as several regions across Syria are being targeted by government sponsored campaigns of repression. Demonstrators are demanding a qualified improvement to Syria's human rights situation, namely the release of political prisoners and justice for arbitrary detainees.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for the media and NGOs to cover the protests due to heavy repressive measures taken by the Syrian authorities. Alkarama fears that the killings are being committed by the authorities with total impunity. Eyewitness video evidence has revealed that authorities may be directly involved in killings.
The video below shows Bachar El Assad’s brother standing next to military agents and surrounded by what are appear dead corpses:
Alkarama has requested the intervention of the the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions with the Syrian authorities, in order that the authorities meet their obligations under international human rights law and take the necessary steps to prevent any further killings of peaceful protestors.
Alkarama calls on the Syrian government and security forces to exercise restraint in view of the protests, and respect their international and national obligations, including the absolute right to life and the freedom of opinion and expression.
Below is a list of those killed during recent protests since 18 March 2011:
