Syria: Disappeared human rights defender Yahya Al-Shurbaji at risk of torture

Yahya Al-Shurbaji, a 33-year old Syrian human rights defender was arrested on 6 September 2011 in Sahnaya, in the Damascus countryside following a car chase by agents of the Damascus Intelligence Service. Mr Al-Shurbaji and his friend Ghayath Mattar were victim of an ambush: they went together to the Al Mazza Military Airport believing that Mr Al-Shurbaji's brother, who is detained there, was injured and needed an ambulance. Given the facts of the case, Alkarama was seized of the case.

Syria : The Human rights Council condemns Al Assad's regime

For the second time this year, the Human Rights Council met today to consider the human rights situation in Syria, resulting in the adoption of Resolution A/HRC/S-17/L.1.
This resolution condemns the massive and systematic use of violence by the regime against its population, and establishes an independent Commission of Inquiry that will replace the Office of the High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) Fact Finding Mission, which was sent in April to investigate human rights violations in Syria following the adoption of Resolution S-16/1.

Syria : A detainee killed in prison

On 31 July 2011, Fahd Ali Adnan was arrested by State Security agents at Badran Printers in Duma, a city located 10 kilometers north-east from Damascus. At 4pm that day, he was transferred to Al Khatib prison and subjected to violent torture.

On 2 August 2011, Fahd Ali was taken back to his cell following a session of torture. Shortly after, he started to have convulsions. His co-detainees immediately called the guards, who did not respond for thirty minutes. They finally took Mr Adnan out of his cell, but brought him back in the same state two hours later.

Alkarama is concerned to learn that Syrian human rights lawyer Mustafa Osso currently risks disciplinary action by the Syrian Bar Association's Al Hasaka Branch. The disciplinary action would be for critical statements he made in the media about the violent response of the authorities to protests happening in the country.

Syria: Leading member of the Syrian Democratic People's Party George Sabra disappeared for third time in 3 years

On 21 June 2011 Mr Georges Sabra was arrested for the third time in three years by armed agents from the security services. Leader of the main opposition party in Syria, he has suffered persecution in recent years, including arrest and enforced disappearance, the first time on 24 March 2010 and a second time on 10 April 2011. At present, a month after his second release on 10 May 2011, he was again disappeared by the Syrian authorities.
His family has not been able to obtain any information on his whereabouts as of 21 June.
