Mohamed Al Aryan Aouda, a 19 year old Egyptian student from the Directorate of Ismailia, was arrested from his home by members of the Egyptian State Security Intelligence (SSI) on 16 August 2009 and his family has been unable to ascertain the location of his current place of detention or his fate since then.

Alkarama today submitted the case of Mr Mohamed Aouda to the Special Rapporteur on Torture and the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances.

Alkarama has dealt with a number of other cases of detainees disappeared by the SSI in Egypt for long periods before being released without charge or trial. A number of those released explained to Alkarama that they had been detained in the SSI's headquarters in Nasr City where they were repeatedly tortured and were detained in inhumane conditions. None of these detainees were ever brought before a judge, and they were only treated more humanely in the weeks leading up to their release in order to ensure that all marks of torture would heal.
